How long have you been in business?

Describe any specific challenges you are facing
I recently moved to Scottsdale, Arizona and just launched my business here this year. I am busy working on introducing myself to realtors and homeowners and working on establishing relationships with them and other home stagers and designers in this area.
Like any new business owner, it can be challenging getting all my systems in place and trying to not keep reinventing the wheel!
What got you into staging in the first place?
I love creating beauty and serenity in a home! I became interested in home staging when we were selling our previous home in a challenging market and discovered how it could set us apart from the competition.
What was your previous career?
I have worked in Retail Sales and Management for a major CA retailer and was also a Language Arts Teacher and School Librarian.
What do you know now that you wished you knew on your first day of business?
How generous and wonderful the staging community is! I have learned so much from others who so willingly share their experiences and expertise with each other. There is a sense of camaraderie and community and a desire to help one another. “A rising tide lifts all boats! ”
What has been your biggest business challenge and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge is trying to compete with other companies who seemingly under-charge for their services. Our local RESA chapter meetings have been incredibly helpful with this, however.
We are working on educating one another about pricing and what it takes to be profitable. I am comfortable with not being the low price leader… I am confident in my ability to provide beautiful home staging while working within a budget and my clients recognize the service and the value I provide.
What objection have you heard from a client and how did you overcome it?
A realtor contacted me to do an occupied staging for one of his listings. Prior to the consultation, he worked very hard to get me to lower my fee with the promise of multiple stagings to come. Since I was offering my services at a very fair price, I held firm. The realtor was present at the consultation and was so thrilled afterwards that he actually gave me a tip!
